SPIFFE Overview

This SPIFFE documentation page introduces SPIFFE (Secure Production Identity Framework for Everyone), a set of open-source standards for securely identifying software systems in dynamic and heterogeneous environments. It explains the problem SPIFFE solves—traditional identity approaches like network location or pre-shared keys don't work well for workloads that scale, move, and are created and destroyed frequently—and describes the core components: the SPIFFE ID (a URI-based identity), the SVID (a cryptographically verifiable identity document, typically an X.509 certificate or JWT), and the Workload API, which workloads use to obtain their identity without pre-provisioned secrets. It also covers the SPIRE implementation, the role of trust domains, and how SPIFFE enables mutually authenticated, identity-based connections between services across platforms and clouds.
