Context Collapse, Part 3: AI Worming Through Word

The third installment in the "Context Collapse" series examines how AI features embedded in Microsoft Word can be exploited so that a document itself becomes a propagation vector—an "AI worm." The post explores how AI assistants that ingest document content, follow embedded instructions, and act on the user's behalf can be manipulated through crafted text, letting malicious instructions spread from document to document as the AI processes and rewrites content. It discusses the trust boundary problems that arise when an assistant treats document contents as instructions, why conventional security controls struggle with this class of attack, and what it implies for organizations deploying AI copilots in everyday productivity tools.
