3 lessons from frontier AI vulnerability research | Microsoft Security Blog
Taesoo Kim of Microsoft's FORGE Lab shares lessons from AI-native vulnerability research after the team helped discover Windows vulnerabilities assigned 140 CVEs (52 in September 2026 alone) and submitted 155 validated reports across 23 open-source projects, 93 of which had documented maintainer acknowledgement. The three lessons: shift from frontier capability to scale, since discovery is repeatable but validation is the bottleneck—adding auditors grows the queue without shipping more fixes; shift from token consumption to reasoning economics, asking where the next unit of reasoning actually changes a decision; and treat validation and remediation as a continuous learning loop that feeds evidence back into scanning. The post also reports Linux kernel validation costs (PoC generation averaging $3.61 and 21.5 minutes per confirmed crash), describes the Akrites coordinated disclosure effort, and advises security leaders to count validated fixes rather than findings.
