NIST Faces Challenges in Managing Growing CVE Backlog

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is facing challenges in managing the growing backlog of Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVEs) in its National Vulnerability Database (NVD). In 2024, CVE submissions increased by 32%, leading to delays despite NIST's efforts to maintain processing speeds. To address this, NIST is enhancing internal processes and exploring machine learning technologies to automate parts of the CVE processing workflow, aiming to reduce the backlog and improve efficiency.
